Four-card support for a bid that promises four or five cards in the suit, such as a natural opening bid of one of a suit. Three cards suffice if partner has shown six or more cards in the suit. If partner has made a prepared opening in a minor, you need five cards.
In most systems, showing primary support for a major fixes the suit as trumps.
