A card that at least one player knows to be in a particular hand. For instance, whenever one of the unseen hands shows out of a suit, all the remaining unseen cards in that suit become marked in the other player’s hand. Marked cards can also arise by inference from the play.
If West, who has bid spades, leads the ♠Q, the ♠J becomes a marked card in West’s hand.
