ECHO

The play by a defender of an unnecessarily high card on the first round of a suit followed by a lower card on the second round is an ‘echo’ (eg the seven followed by the two). In the UK, the more common term is a ‘peter’ or ‘high-low’.

You usually use it as a signal to partner that you like the suit, or that you have an even number of cards in it.
